故事发生在1947年的英格兰，名声远扬的大侦探福尔摩斯（伊恩·麦克莱恩 Ian McKellen 饰）如今已是93岁高龄的老人了，晚年期间，他过着离群索居的生活，陪伴在他身边的只有管家芒罗夫人（劳拉·琳妮 Laura Linney 饰）和她的儿子罗杰（米罗·帕克 Milo Parker 饰）。
